Below you can view a video for the Foley creations used in the most recent adapetation of "King King". As you will notice, sounds are being re-created to hightened their impact, without the Foley enhanced sounds there are moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The following interview with Ben Burtt (famous sound designer for animation) is really a great way to see the work that goes into creating really inventive and interesing new sounds that are obviously NOT from sound libraries that are readily available. Creating your own library is definitely the way to go!
Keep in mind this is something that happens for live action film as well -- not just for animation. Sometimes we really need to beef up the the sounds that were captured on the production site ... this is how you do it.
I have added a series of videos from the Disney vault of 'way, way back' -- see below. It is really a good series (actually it is one hour long show that someone kindly taped and put online in five video segments). It does a lot to address where sound for moving images started and affords us a nice point of comparison for how these techniques are addressed today. I hope you enjoy it as mucha s I did!
