Art + Design Education Department

News Update - March 2012

The current events at the University of the Arts, Art Education Department, bring to mind a quote from artist, Marc Chagall, “Changes in societal structure and in art would possess more credibility if they had their origins in the soul and spirit.” The soul and spirit are elements which are perpetually guiding every occurrence in the Art Education department!
The Department has proposed a five year MAT (Masters of Art in Teaching) program for undergraduate students, Although the program has not yet been approved, the philosophy behind it is to ensure that a student’s knowledge and skills are up to date with the trends affecting the art industry, so that future employers will view the Uarts graduate art instructor as a valuable asset to the school district. Also, the five year MAT program will provide quality training, so that the student will efficiently learn new skills and specializations, encouraging them to become a more versatile art educator, therefore increasing the future instructor’s long term value to the school in which they are employed.
The next successful event is the Graduate Student Art Show, which is displayed February 27-March 27, on the tenth floor of the Terra building. This has been a terrific opportunity for Grad students in the MAT program to exhibit their individual styles as an artist. This helps us recognize the benefits of student art exhibitions. When exhibition in a school art department is a regular component of the art program, the entire art curriculum becomes more articulate and purposeful.
There will be an upcoming Art Therapy Show, March 30-April 27. Art Therapy is valuable and beneficial on many levels. It provides the client-artist with essential insight into thoughts, feelings and emotions. Some benefits of art therapy include, self-discovery, empowerment, relaxation, stress relief, symptom relief and surprisingly, physical relaxation.
The Saturday Arts Lab Art Show will be exhibited April 21. This exhibit will display the unique styles of each student enrolled in the Saturday Arts Lab classes. The Saturday Arts Lab offers exciting courses in the visual arts and technology for children in grades K-8. I am presently a student teacher in the SAL Visual Expression class and I can attest that these extraordinary fourth and fifth graders have demonstrated impressive perseverance, drive, creativity and enduring motivation. I have had the absolutely cherished advantage of assisting them throughout the developmental stages of their masterpieces.

Following the SAL art show, will be the student teaching exhibit and art show. The opening reception will be held April 29. This exhibit will display the work of K-12 art students from various schools, guided by Uarts student teachers’ curriculum. Proud family members and friends of the students are sure to attend this captivating art show! An array of refreshments will be served.
This wraps up the most recent Art Education Department news, however, to continually remain aware of upcoming events, be sure to view the calendar on the Uarts portal.
