COURSE DESCRIPTION
The ESLI Visual Art Studio is a multimedia course that introduces students to the college studio environment and teaches technical, creative and problem solving skills. The class will work on and present 2 major projects that use a combination of traditional and digital art making methods.

OBJECTIVES 
Students will:

  • Practice US college-level studio environment norms through engaging in painting, drawing and photography activities, and critiques. 
  • Practice communication strategies specific to the studio setting and art critiques. Practice objective vs. subjective communication strategies and question/answer techniques.
  • Develop basic skills in using digital tools and software for studio and liberal arts projects through creating a multi-media presentation.

English proficiency and analytical complexity will vary based on level.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Students must attend each studio class and arrive on time. If you are going to be absent or late, you must email or call the instructors ahead of time, and arrange to make up missed work.
  • Students must participate in class.
  • Students are expected to fulfill the project requirements as assigned.
  • Students must arrive to class prepared.  Bring the following to every class:
    • Journal
    • Supply case
    • Flash Drive/USB Drive

 

REQUIRED MATERIALS

  • Journal
  • Drawing and collage tools: pen, pencil, watercolor paints, glue, eraser
  • Flash Drive/USB Drive (you can buy one at the University bookstore on 13th Street b/n Pine and Spruce)
  • ·      Camera (digital, disposable (throw away), or Polaroid)


HELPFUL MATERIALS

GRADING:
Students must meet the class and project requirements in order to pass the class.

20%        sketch journal entries; art production
20%        participation
20%        use of technical skills; problem solving and creativity
40 %       digital production, interpretation; presentation 

 

PROJECTS:

 

“My Philly” Illustrated Journal and Multimedia Video Essay

In the first few weeks of Art Studio, you will work in class on drawing, painting and photographing techniques. In and outside of class you will work in your journal documenting your experiences in your new city and surroundings.  The last part of this project requires you to use your journal material and class material to create a multimedia video that shows Philadelphia through your eyes. You will present the My Philly video and essay on October 12.  

 

Art Comes to Life / Self Portrait

 

My M.A.P. (Multimedia Autobiography Project): Past, Present, Future  

In the last few weeks of Art Studio, you will work on a video project that incorporates drawings, music, Photoshop and collage. The project will be inspired by your autobiography as an artist. The video may also be inspired by your art making process. You will present the My M.A.P. video and essay on December 13.

Wed. September 5

 

Class Description 

  • Journal Share (5 sketches due today)
  • Introduction to Project I “My Philly” Illustrated Journal and Multimedia Video
  • Intro to Photoshop – Exercise

 

Studio Work

  • Work in your journal
  • Select and scan images from journal
  • Make folder for Project I. Save all work, scanned images and photographs to same folder. Save folder to USB Drive.
  • Change/ manipulate at least 3 images using Photoshop
  • Select images for video and save to folder

 

Homework: DUE September 12

  • Write or find text that will guide the narrative or theme of your video. Text can be original or found. It can be taken from any of the following: your journal; story; poem; song; quotes; etc.
  • Prepare for lecture next week. Write 1-2 questions in your journal 
  • Continue to work in journal and gather images
