My Philosophy of Art Education

Art is universal. Its language is employed by human cultures in all places and throughout time. The need to express oneself visually and creatively seems to be an essential part of our nature.

An education in the arts opens us up to what it means to be human. I believe in the arts, passionately. I believe that it provides a safe place for students to explore personal expression. I believe it provides a window into our culture both past and present. I believe that it can support and enrich other disciplines.

Art provides an unparalleled opportunity for creative thinking and problem solving. In addition it paves the way for understanding human history, cultural context, and the changing nature of aesthetics. In a more global sense, it offers the opportunity for students to understand themselves and their society in greater depth.
