Donatello was a highly skilled artist during the early Renaissance period with his main focus on sculpture. One of his most famous works, and the most controversial, is his bronze casting of David. Many aspects of the piece represent Donatello’s hidden homosexuality and, at the time, talking about homosexuality was considered taboo. The figure appears to be represented as naked versus nude. Also, David's sword glides up his thigh, pointing directly at his groin. Two things of which hint at homosexuality. Donatello’s David was centuries ahead of its time as it shattered the norms of society.
